Official Selection: Sam & Emma

“When their love wanes after a miscarriage, two heartbroken women try to piece together their relationship, highlighting the hardship and dysfunction that can arise from trauma and grief.”

When I wrote Sam & Emma, I wanted to tell a story of immense love and intense pain and how each can result from the other. This film is about expectation, grief, knowing when to walk away, and when to come back. I have tremendous respect for films about individuals struggling with their sexuality, and as a queer woman, I will continue to advocate for their presence in and amongst all forms of media. However, in this film, I wanted to represent and explore LGBTQ women struggling with issues away from sexual identity, and more toward our identity as women, our capabilities as human beings, and the roles we play in our relationships.
